5 Ways to Find Motivation When the Going Gets Tough!
I love setting goals and planning projects for the New Year! But after the newness and excitement of my goals fade, then comes the challenge of working hard to accomplish them.
As I prepare to start my final semester of law school, I know there will be challenges and moments where I feel less motivated and less inspired to accomplish the goals I have set for myself; both in regard to my school goals and personal goals.
For me, when working on projects and goals in the past, there typically comes a point where something challenging and/or unexpected happens that makes the goal feel more difficult to accomplish. This point is generally accompanied by a lack of desire or motivation to move forward on the goal, even though I know deep down that I want to accomplish it!
I realized this is a great time for me to decide now, how I will react in the future when the goals and projects I have set for myself become challenging and my motivation feels low.
Here are five tools I plan to use when I need to muster up a little manual motivation this year!

- Remind yourself why you want to do this - think big picture and how this smaller task will help you accomplish your overall goal.
- Can I make this fun? Or turn this part of the project into a challenge? (e.g. I bet I could complete this portion of my project in 30 minutes - if so, reward!)
- Give yourself a little reward while you work - like having a coffee or treat to enjoy while you complete this part of the task.
- Take a short break every now and then to do something else; preferably something you like doing - take a walk, check the news or social media, play with the dogs, craft something, write a blog post or journal entry.
- Press on, even when you don't feel like it! Return to your focus each time you get distracted - once you get into a rhythm/flow with your work, time goes by more quickly!
